Program Description:

Join us for this series of three classes with Jon Landaw on the Five Powers (sometimes called the Five Forces). As Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche has stated:

Whether you experience happiness or unhappiness, success or failure, health or illness, by practicing these five powers, which are the essence of the whole Dharma, you use every experience to develop the two bodhicittas. In this way, your mind will always be happy. … It is also the best preparation for the happiest death ... the best psychology of all and  the best, deepest meditation.

These five powers, which are to be employed throughout our life, and most especially at the time of our death, are traditionally identified as:

  • the power of Intention
  • the power of Familiarity
  • the power of the Antidote
  • the power of the White Seed
  • the power of Prayer

The supreme importance of practicing these five powers is expressed in stanza 97 of the Guru Puja as follows:

In short, no matter what appearances arise, be they good or bad,
I seek your blessings to transform them into a path ever enhancing the two bodhichittas
Through the practice of the five forces—the quintessence of the entire Dharma--
And thus to enjoy solely a blissful mind.

In this course, which is open to all, we will learn:

  • what these five powers (or forces) are,
  • how to make them an essential part of our daily life,
  • how to practice them at the time of our death, and
  • how to prepare for our death by rehearsing the eight stages of the death evolution
