According to the Buddha, attachment, anger and the rest of our unhappy states of mind are in the very nature of fear. But they are not at the core of our being and can be removed. This is implied by the very word “buddha” itself: the first syllable implies the total eradication from our minds or all delusions and the second syllable implies the development to perfection of our goodness and wisdom.
The job of a Buddhist, then, is to become intimately familiar with our mind so that we can the job of developing this marvelous potential – and, finally, by realizing emptiness – going beyond fear.
About Ven. Robina Courtin
Since being ordained as a Buddhist nun in the late 1970s, Ven. Robina has worked full-time for Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche's FPMT. Over the years she has served as editorial director of Wisdom Publications, editor of Mandala Magazine, executive director of Liberation Prison Project, and as a touring teacher of Buddhism. Her life and work with prisoners have been featured in the documentary films Chasing Buddha and Key to Freedom.
