Exploring Forgiveness
with Sujatha Baliga
Sunday, Nov 17: 10:30am-12pm
In this talk and meditation session, we will explore the following questions: What does it mean to forgive someone? To forgive myself? When is it appropriate to ask for forgiveness? Is there someone in my life I would benefit from forgiving? Once the decision has been made to forgive, what are some practical methods for moving toward a true experience of forgiveness? The session will also utilize meditation focused on breath observation and somatic exercises in which participants will locate where in their bodies they feel resistance to, or comfort with, the concepts we explore.
This is part of our Taste of Buddhism program. Join us for a short talk, meditation, and taste treats on Sunday mornings. Each week features a new topic. Open to all levels.

As the Director of the Restorative Justice Project at Impact Justice, Sujatha Baliga helps communities across the nation implement restorative justice alternatives to juvenile detention and zero-tolerance school discipline policies. She’s also dedicated to using this approach to end child sexual abuse and intimate partner violence. Sujatha is a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conferences; she speaks publicly and inside prisons about her own experiences as a survivor of child sexual abuse and her path to forgiveness. Her personal and research interests include the forgiveness of seemingly unforgivable acts, survivor-led movements, restorative justice’s potential impact on racial disparities in our justice system, and Buddhist notions of conflict transformation.
Sujatha’s faith journey undergirds her justice work. A long-time Buddhist practitioner, she’s a lay member of the Gyuto Foundation, a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Richmond, CA, where she leads meditation on Monday nights. She makes her home in Berkeley, CA, with her partner of 22 years, and their child. Sujatha was recently named a 2019 MacArthur Fellow. |
