Mantra Meaning and Use

Mantra Meditation (or Chant) is an ancient tradition where the repetition of mantra, a sacred sound formula, is used to calm, focus, and protect the mind. Rather than repeat the harmful and cruel things that we say to ourselves daily like “I’m too fat,” “I’m not smart enough,” or “I’m not good enough,” a chanted mantra can replace these negative thoughts and reveal the clarity of one’s true nature.

Karen Nelson Villanueva, MPA, PhD, is a former chaplain, and has led people and groups in mantra meditation at UCSF, San Francisco General Hospital and several hospice care facilities. Recently, she delivered a paper on "Mantra Meditation in Buddhist Hospice Care to Alleviate Anxiety" in Shanghai, China. She has been a member of Tse Chen Ling for 16 years and has been a part of the meditation team.
