Why meditate?
“We meditate to investigate the basic energy we already have, the energy of our body, speech and mind: what is it, where does it come from, why does it do what it does? The mind is like the central generator that provides electricity to the entirety of a big city; it’s mental energy that determines whether the actions of our body, speech and mind are positive or negative, the cause of happiness or suffering.
All human beings have an innate desire to overcome suffering, to find happiness. Training the mind to think differently, through meditation, is one important way to avoid suffering and be happy.
— His Holiness the Dalai Lama
Most of the time we’re unaware of what we’re doing; that’s the main problem. Meditation can wake us up and prevent us from sleeping our way through life. . . .In order to benefit others we don’t necessarily have to do anything physical, we just have to turn our mind in that direction. This brings great joy into our mind, a warm feeling to our heart and clarifies the purpose of our life.
– Lama Thubten Yeshe, inspiration for FDCW and UE, Universal Love

About Ven. Katy Cole:
Originally from Perth, Western Australia, Ven. Katy Cole has been a Buddhist nun for over 20 years. She ordained with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala in 2004. Prior to meeting her Mahayana Buddhist teachers, Ven. Katy studied Vipassana meditation with practitioners from Myanmar. In 2008, Katy completed a 12 month meditation retreat on Kangaroo Island, South Australia
and has completed various practices and retreats within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, since that time. Ven. Katy is currently living in Marin. She leads meditations online, over Zoom for various centers within the FPMT, and in-person meditations at the YMCA Marin branch.
