Awakening the Kind Heart: How to Meditate on Compassion
Friday night January 6 at 7:00pm and Saturday January 7 in two sessions: 10am - noon and 2:00 - 4:00pm (with lunch provided)
Everyone appreciates kindness. A smile, a few friendly words, a show of concern when we’re troubled or feeling unwell, an offer of help — gestures of kindness like these brighten our day and ease whatever sadness we may feel in our hearts. And just as we appreciate other people being kind to us, others appreciate it when we are kind to them. But though kindness is important, it doesn’t always come easily: sometimes we are filled with anger, jealousy, or pride, and being kind is the last thing we feel like doing. Or we get so caught up in our work and responsibilities that we find no time to think of others. Sangye Khadro (aka Kathleen McDonald, author of How to Meditate) introduces some powerful methods for awakening the kind heart in us all.

Working with Depression : Using Joy
Sunday Jan 8 2:00-4:00pm
Sangye Khadro will explore the condition of depression, and how to work with it using time tested methods from Tibetan Buddhism, especially practices to cultivate joy. We spend our lives being seduced by the outside world, believing completely that happiness and suffering come from ‘out there’. But in fact, our experience depends on us. We have full responsibility for our lives. The more we are aware, the better we become at making skillful choices. She will challenge our concepts of seeking satisfaction in a material world-not as a method of escape from the world, but as a way of balancing our material well-being with our inner well-being. The methods using antidotes taught by the Buddha, help bring us to an experience of joy, contentment and peace. Spend an afternoon learning the tools to lighten and release the dark mind of depression.

From the Middle Length Lam Rim by Lama Tsongkhapa
January 10 – March 13
Tuesdays at 6:30pm
Emily Hsu
In this module, we will conclude the section on Special Insight as well as the entire Middle Length Lam Rim text written by Lama Tsongkhapa. This is the last of a four-part series on this subject of Special Insight.
We will begin with a brief review of the two truths, and then we will proceed to cover the different kinds of special insight, how to cultivate special insight, how calm abiding and special insight unite, and complete the course by reviewing the entire path and how to get realizations.
As Shantideva wrote: All of these practices were taught
By the Mighty One for the sake of wisdom.
Therefore those who wish to pacify suffering
Should generate this wisdom.
This ongoing course is part of the FPMT Basic Program (intermediate level) module on the Stages of the Path. Root text: Tsongkhapa, Middle Length Lam-Rim Prerequisite: Having received some prior teachings on emptiness is highly recommended. Levels: Intermediate to Advanced
Emily was a resident of San Francisco for many years before heading to Nepal in 1996. While there, she attended the November Course at Kopan which was her jumping point into the Dharma. She completed FPMT's 7-year Masters program at Institut Lama Tsong Khapa in Italy in 2004 followed by a 9-month retreat to integrate the material. Following her completion, Lama Zopa Rinpoche observed that it came out well for Emily to teach "at all the Bay Area centers". Emily is teaching the foundation level classes of our Basic Buddhist Studies Program, becoming the junior professor to Geshe Dakpa's senior professor. Emily brings a warm, vibrant and accessible energy to her teaching at Tse Chen Ling. She is also teaching weekly at Gyalwa Gyatso Buddhist Center in San Jose and leading workshops at other centers, including Vajrapani in Boulder Creek, CA.
